i revisited this old photo of mine taken in 2009 and gave it a fresh crop. it was taken on the Yellowstone river one morning as the mist was still hanging around. I would like to say I staked out my vantage point in advance and waited for the perfect moment but in reality I just stopped the car and managed to get off one shot before he headed to the bank.

MAYBE I would crop a little bit of the bottom, but otherwise very nice.

Very nice. I've fished the Yellowstone quite a bit over the last 20 years but mostly from a drift boat.

Well neither my partner nor myself are anglers so for us it was a sightseeing trip. I believe they fish for cut-throat trout in the river, is that the case ?

I tried a few different variations and this one using traditional "rule of thirds" seemed to work best for me. Personal choice I guess but I think this crop gives a depth to the picture that it cannot get from any other visual cues.

Great shot. My own limited experience so far would indicate that being prepared and acting fast gets interesting photos.

To paraphrase my Photographic Composition professor; "It's more of a suggestion than a rule and mathematical precision is not required, in fact "sort of in the ballpark" works". He further suggested that 80% of the assignment images he saw followed that, rather than the other "rules of composition".

This too follows the "rule of thirds" to roughly the same precision as your original posting.

The image looks mysterious to me....fishing amidst clouds... Manfred's crop made it more mundane; i liked both but differently

I'm with Sharon's original comment and that from Dan, Peter. Like to see an appreciable amount off the bottom, but still retain its dominance, even taking some off the top.

I think it's beautiful! But yes, I also like the closer crop. Gorgeous picture and would grace any wall.

Can't help but throw in one more opinion. I like the original for the sense of space and isolation that says something about the angler. I'd even zoom out if possible.
