Canada geese during a winter thaw

This sort of thing isn't my usual, and it was pushing my equipment to the limit. I had my 100-400 at 400 mm (hence at f/5.6) on my old 7D, with a 1.4x teleconverter. That meant no autofocus. I didn't think to bring a tripod, so I had it on a monopod. Needless to say, it was very hard to keep the camera still enough at that FL and aperture. C&C welcome anyway.

Nice angle of view, were you ascending a stairway when you took this?

No, I was standing on the ice on the other side

Nice, looks like it was shot at a low angle.

Well even at maximum size your photo looks good to me! I might have put the far edge of the ice at about 1/3 from the top but really that is a minor thing. I'd be grateful to have that shot.

Just a thought. You have some good reflections there but I wonder about losing a small amount at the bottom and going more panoramic; possibly something like 16 x 9. To my eye there would still be sufficient reflection and it seems to create a stronger scene?

I like the way you got a mirror image of geese to go with the mirror reflection in the ice.

Thanks, all. The top placement was determined in part by my trying to give the birds enough headroom. The stuff behind them is just clutter, and even at f/10 (f/8 would have been the best I could do, given the equipment, but I wanted a little leeway for inaccurate focus), it was too much in focus. I blurred a copy and painted over that part. The a crop on the bottom: an interesting idea. I'll past one below.

In the process, I made two changes to the initial image, and I replaced the one above. First, I backed off the tonal contrast a bit, as it seemed artificial. I also removed a painting error: in dodging the second bird from the left, I had inadvertently created a white halo around the head.

That is exactly what I was thinking about, Dan.

Yep... by cutting down on the lower section it has increased the proportion of the area at, and above the level of the birds and that works for me. In any case it's a really nice image IMHO.
