    And the next question is what is that robberfly eating? I can't make it out but there are some very tiny mites also around its meal.

    The big beasty is a Robber Fly. There is a mite on the main course. I'm hoping Geoff can identify the main course with the attached shot. Okay tiny pics is mucking up again. Time for plan B.

    Looks like some form of bug, Brian, but I wonder if it is the larval stage of something? Although it does appear to have fully formed wings and clubbed antennae like many small beetles. The wings look exceptionally long so I'm not really sure what it might be.

    It is a beetle, Brian.

    Having looked at it again, I now have overcome my few doubts concerning the visible wings and lack of a hard wing case covering the abdomen. If you look carefully you can see that the wing cases are actually open; so this one was probably a beetle in flight when it was caught.

    Certainly the fly had no lunch, flew away and came back with lunch.
