Helpful Posts: Couple of point a shoots from work this morning. Just looking for opinions on composition.
While I like the color and reflections of the second photo, I'm bothered by the gap between barges and the lack of linearity.
The first photo I'm just not sure about.

I'd have no idea how to compose this subject. Including the person in both is good for providing the sense of scale. Intuitively I like the second on better. Not sure why. Greater sense of size maybe with the barges stretching away as they do. I like that there's more water in the shot as well. Gap between the barges doesn't bother me. Interesting.

To be absolutely honest I do not know what the subject is supposed to be. Sorry, I am trying not to be negative, but sometimes pics don't work, no matter how you crop them. The second shot perhaps has a little more going for it than the first except that you cut off the 'S' on the first barge which makes the whole thing look chopped.

Try a crop on the first image just left of black end of the pier (?) and just above the top of the chip pile on the first barge. May have to clone out the antenna. This makes image lines more prominent and makes the barges dominate. Adheres to the basic tenet "If an element is not adding to the image it is subtracting" You don't need the sky or water.

For me, Art, the gap between barges in the first image works fine. It would appear to be a bit confusing without an obvious gap.
Maybe a slight crop from the top and left side?
Personally, I would have liked to see just a tiny bit more water at the bottom, but not really a serious point.

I like the first image. The subject is obvious and the inclusion of the landscape in the background gives it some context. The blues and the green object make a nice contrast with the reds and browns of the subject.
The 2nd image seems as if you were undecided as to whether the subject is the barges or the reflection of the barges.
