    Arlington West, Santa Monica, California

Taken is 2015, while driving south along the Pacific Coastal highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles, we made a stop in Santa Monica and while I was about to walk onto the pier, saw this incredible scene to my right and grabbed this shot.

IMO, this is an impactful image... Even though I know that there are no men buried beneath the markers.

BTW: I of course recognize the crosses signifying a Christian, the Crescent signifying a Muslim, and the Star of David signifying a Jewish veteran but, I am cannot recognize the other emblems along the first row. (#3 to #12 from image left).

    Richard,
They appear to be profiles of helmets with an insignia or message on them. Unfortunately, because I didn't take any close-up shots but only two with a wide lens to get the entire field, I'm unable to make out exactly what is on the helmets.
Perhaps there is more information to be gleaned here:

A powerful image, and very well captured. Have you thought about B&W? the image is mostly about lines, and removing the color might enhance that. I tried a quick edit, just doing a default B*W conversion and increasing contrast substantially, and it seemed more powerful to me. It's a bit like Edward Weston's iconic image of a tomato field, but with more emotional content.

The frolicking beach goers at the upper portion of the image add to that image somehow. BTW, I was recently recruited to join Veteran's for Peace, the sponsors of Arlington West but, respectfully declined...

I looked up the emblems of belief allowed on federal headstones are was rather surprised at the variety

I have only noticed Christian Crosses, Jewish Stars of David and Muslim Crescents. However, there are many more. There is even a symbol for Aethiest allowed

which is only right because a person should not be laid to rest under a symbol that doesn't represent his or her beliefs...
