    3.2 gigapixel sensor: That's a BIG camera

    I was drawn to a new astronomical telescope and camera by this article on the BBC website:

    http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-43018706

    Upon visiting the website on the telescope itself, I found this link about the camera, which is pretty impressive: for a start it is apparently the largest digital camera ever constructed, and has a 3.2 gigapixel sensor. To learn more see:

    Gosh I thought SOMEONE would have a comment on this one, so I am doing the honours to stop it bouncing.

    Considering where it is I bet the service calls are not going to be cheap either...

    I like the filter changing mechanism.

    Really, when you look at it, it's an elegant, basic design... but the that sensor is MASSIVE and heaven knows what computing power has to go into processing that lot...

    That's impressive, Trev, thanks for posting.

    Now, if only it were mirrorless.....

    That is something else. If it needs a repair imagine the reaction when the repair centre sees the return address.

    Terrible to see money wasted on this. What use is it, you probably can't take a selfie or picture of your lunch with it.

    Ah you have to think outside (your box), it would much cheaper to move you home to it I suspect. Maybe a camper van?

    I saw the specifications and I think that they are phantastic:
    3.5 degrees field of view (it corresponds to 700 mm telephoto lens on a Full Frame camera);
    3.2 Gigapixels (wow! it could emulate a digital zoom of 14.5 X);
    10 microns pixel size (bigger than Nikon D5 pixels = 6,4 microns), sensibility to light shall be very good (and increased if pixels could be binded).

    But the camera is too big (it don't fit in the trunk of my car).
    Because of that, I prefer to continue using my entry level photographic gear.

    It is indeed a 'stellar' performer!

    Yes! The resolution of LSST camera (0,2 second/pixel) is even better than the resolution of LORRI camera (1,02 second/pixel). Please see my threads New Horizons Captures Record-Breaking Images in the Kuiper Belt and The camera of the farthest photographer from the earth.
