    Then and Now

Just before I left Canada to return to NZ I passed an art gallery in downtown Victoria. They had on display several works by various artists. I was taken by the relationship between two works by different artists because for me they created a link between how we are when we are young and as we are old and looking back at those images of us in our prime.

In the painting the subject is young, fit, laid back and looking relaxed and confident. The statue, in contrast, shows a aged and worn character, leaning forward, shoulders slumped. The facial and other features COULD be those of the same person, which is an amazing fluke.

This was taken hand-held through glass, with very little room for avoiding obstructions and getting the right space etc. around the subject, so don't worry about pixel peeping - it's not meant to be technically perfect. I just found the unintended (according to the shop owner) relationship to be engrossing and poignant.

I'm close enough to the wooden chair to be scared. Great photo.

This is great. On the other hand though the person on the chair looks a lot like me - seriously.

I know what you mean, I had the same feeling myself - seriously. Perhaps that's why I was so taken with it...

we are o0f an age and while I could never relate to the painting the man in the chair certainly grabs me.

It is always a danger when you photograph someone else's art that you end up doing nothing more than creating a record of someone else's creativity. But that is not the case here. The viewpoint you have taken and the juxtaposition of the two elements is an act of insight and creativity in itself. Well done I really like it.

I really like it. The perspective and composition you managed to achieve with the restrictions you had are great. You have been lucky with the colours of the two artworks as they work exceptionally well together. It's a bit of a pity you needed to crop the painting slightly.

It's a thumbs up from me.

P.S. The gallery curator needs a pat on the back as well.

Lovely juxtaposition of old and young. I'm the old geezer and while I was once young, I never had that physique except in my dreams :-)

Thank you Nandakumar, Chris, Paul, and Mahere.

It is interesting that the gallery owner was OK with me photographing his wares which I took care do do from outside - I spent time talking to him and asked if I could take the shot. I was walking by the same place at another time and another display and saw people wandering into his shop to take photos with their cellphones. He was not impressed and threw them out - not surprising really, it's all about respect.
