Seems to me CiC should open up a 'Robber Fly' monthly competition

Where did you find this one, Bill?

Without a view of the wings I'm struggling to get started on an identification; but those two tone femora are distinctive and make me wonder about Dioctria baumhaueri (Stripe-legged Robberfly)

Mostly a southern species, found as far north as Cheshire to South Yorkshire, but occasionally found further north.

Indeed it is Geoff! We are in Margaret River in Western Australia . I'm still searching for a reliable ID but will update if something turns up.

    Geoff

The closest match I can find is to this variety of blowfly. The one I photographed is a little shorter (about 6 to 8mm) and appears to have a narrower abdomen - perhaps a juvenile?

Sadly mine is too small and mundane to qualify as a robber!

The "Mundane" reference was to the objects - your true robber fly and my somewhat uncertain fly (other than it is not a robber fly), and not to the images. Your recent post of the robber is outstanding.

Thanks for your comments on the images.
