Interesting composition Brian, although I think "cute" might be pushing things a bit.

This is not an easy shot to do, given the bright background, but a bit of PP work, especially a bit of dodging would not be amiss in bringing out the details of your subject.

Agreed that brighter gives more details. And agreed that a little more brightness would not go amiss. But only a very little bnecause as the brightness goes up the emotion goes down

An interesting picture. I think you need to do some work around the eyes. Keep it simple though.

The emotion might be different, but to suggest the emotion goes down would be inaccurate, in my view.

I do understand that you like darker, more moody scenes, but that suggests to me that a bright background will not be optimal to achieve that mood. That suggests that you have to be careful in choosing where your subject is to create that mood, because having a well lit subject is still going to be key to creating a strong image.

Agreed. It's all too easy for the photographer to be focused on the subject and forgetting about issues like the background and the characteristics of the light.
