    but after selecting the foreground black, the paint bucket is not filling the layer when clicked in the empty layer
    Two things to check;
    after keyboard "D", did you do the "K" to select paintbucket, if so
    are you sure you are affecting the layer you should be?

    I was using other tool to select the checks
    You don't need to select the checks doing it this way

    Dave, I was working on the checks using magic wand tool and manually filling them with black(a painfully slow and laborious task), the result is as follows

    To explain that ...

    Think of the girl as an image on a sheet of clear plastic
    The checks are not real, they are just Elements way of showing you which bits are see through
    All we are trying to do now, is slip a bit of black paper behind the clear plastic

    Hopefully that'll give the desired result

    That's what I was expecting next, but I think you did it the hard way

    Is that what you were after?

    I think so Dave, is it the layer without content that should turn black, if so i am doing it as suggested and it is not changing

    It is, don't know why then, unless you're missing the single mouse click to actually do the fill

    but it is late and I think we may have arrived, your picture looks like what I was aiming for.
