Shots from the kayak

Some time back, several members helped me with information on shooting from a kayak. I finally got up the nerve recently to take my camera gear out on Caddo Lake in Texas and here are a few of my shots. All shot with my first generation Canon 7D and 100-400 lens. Being in the Cypress groves was a very peaceful experience and I spent quite a bit of time with the Great Egret, watching him flit from place to place to fish. A bonus was my first ever shot of a Pileated Woodpecker on my way back to camp. I will definitely be repeating this experience. C&C is always welcome. A good set of photos!

I was intrigued by the first image, probably because I've never been anywhere near a cypress grove. It looks a bit eerie even though the sun appears to have been shining.

For the last two photos, were you handholding the telephoto lens? I'm looking at them on an iPad but the heron in particular appears to be absolutely sharp.

Thank you, Bruce. It is a bit eerie in there! Lots of tall trees but enough gaps for light to come in. That first photo was taken at almost 11:00 am. All of the photos were handheld from the kayak. I shot all of them with shutter speeds of 1/2000 or better to make sure I compensated for my movement. There was enough light that I only had to bump the ISO up to 400. I love my Canon 100-400 - even this first gen version. It performs really well for me.

Well done for going for a new experience. I can understand the nervousness, but it was well worth it.

That is a wonderful image. The composition, the lighting - perfect, in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. The first image is also my favorite. I have a series of 3 - looking, striking and this one - that I may print for a collage. The lighting for that location was perfect for the white subject, I think.

If these are your first shots from a kayak I foresee a problem. How are you going to improve on them?

Ya done good. Both of the egret shots are awesome. Congrats on the pileated. On the GBH I'd prefer to either see more of those beautiful breast feathers or an even tighter shot. This one is kind of in between.

Thanks for the compliments and the feedback on the GBH. The original crop on that is below breast feathers but there is a big blurry stick crossing through them which is what caused me to crop it the way I did. My photoshop skills aren't good enough to deal with the stick.

Well that would explain it And you did get the crest feathers which is much harder to do than one would think. They always seem to be against a dark BG
