    Cristiana 2

Another image of Cristiana with a Venetian carnival mask.

The same lighting as the first image, just touch closer shot.

No problem Roy. Tastes do vary.

This looking over a raised shoulder towards the camera is a very commonly used pose in portraits of women, including the beauty and glamour genres. It gives a view of the model acting coy, which is why it is NEVER used in male portraiture. There is a risk of distortion and making the shoulder look too prominent when shooting at shorter focal lengths with this type of pose, but this shot is done at 200mm on a FF body, so that is not an issue here.

When shooting with experienced models, the photographer will often ask the model to act out a scenario. Here we were working for "coy" or "cat that swallowed the canary" look to go with the cat-face mask. I feel that she delivered the look very well.

Hi Manfred I too find her left shoulder a little overpowering, not so much its prominence in the image but the way her shoulder seems curved across the torso rather than straight on to the camera IYSWIM.
I do like the mask, though it is hiding some of her right eye and making the top of her lip (left top) look misshaped where the mask obscures it.

This mask was a bit large for her face, so that was something that we struggled with during the shoot; which made it tricky to get the alignment perfect (i.e. it didn't happen). Getting the light into her eyes past the mask was tricky and required some compromises in camera and model position.

I'm happy with the shoulder placement as it does what I wanted, I'm less happy with how the eye turned out. While it's not perfect, but I am quite happy with the shot.

I would be happy with the image too Manfred, I wondered if the masks was a problem as it appeared to me that the model was trying to hold it in place with her right hand and that has tilted the mask.

The model was not holding that mask; it was tied at the back of her head. We tried to add a bit of padding to get it to sit a bit higher, but were not particularly successful.

The plague doctor mask did not work at all; we gave up after a single shot.
