    It's all about the light

It's not only abandoned old cottages that I search out and photograph. Abandoned old castles also provide perfect subjects.

Ever since I've been going to Caithness, I have seen the old castle at Keiss as a picture waiting to be taken. On one day in February, the light was what I wanted. This is the result. That thing we here often that it's all about the light, is so true.

Your comments and critique will be welcomed.

Would you consider lowering the glare of the water? Or would that ruin the shot?

For me that is what the shot is about, but others may see it differently.

    Donald,

You certainly have the eye for an appropriate shot and I am glad to see that you still create masterpieces that sum up that gorgeous part of the world.

Bo or Barbara - I'll answer to both!

This comes into its own when blown up on screen and all those lovely shades of grey paint the picture.

    Well worth the wait!

    An excellent simple shot, Donald.

While there is more to photography than this quote, your photo is a good illustration of -

beginners think it is all about the cameras,
enthusiasts think it is all about the lenses,
photographers know it is all about the light.

Donald, a beautiful capture. It also is the perfect illustration of your point... there was a shot waiting to be taken.

For me too, it is the contrast of the light coming off the sea against that beautiful soft misty day. (though I bet it was chilly )

The detail of the castle as I move in close is rendered well which works particularly well for me, (like discovering a secret!)

I may be silly but maybe a mere 15mm crop of the bottom may make it stronger. It is such a great picture and that is why it deserves such attention.
    Cheers Ole

Do you not think, Olé, that would cause the wall nearer to us to be be close to the bottom of the frame?

My wife agrees with me and she is always right except when she's not

I think it would emphasise the beautiful glare of the water, also (consider my wife's opinion).
    Cheers Ole

A judgement of Soloman is upon you Donald..... I'd suggest a number of single malt's before any further deep thought!

No, no. I agree absolutely. I feel I should apologise for thinking differently!

Thank you to everyone else for your comments. I've just had an order for a print of this. Just been working on it to get rid of halos, to sharpen up for printing and, generally, get it into as good a condition that I can for printing.

I really wasn't very sure about this image when I first saw it, however, the various comments made me download the file and view full size on the calibrated monitor.

What a difference - count me in as one of the "Wow" group

Re: It's all about the light

Just for grins I added a bit of gradient fill only to the water to see if it calmed my eye to the brightness of the water glare..and while it is different, it is not better so therefore I have to agree with you on not making that change. (left out the a in Mac so had to redo :-) )
