    Himba Girls

I am continuing to revisit some of my older shots and reprocessing them.

The one was taken in late 2011, while we were visiting Namibia. These are three girls from the Himba tribe who live near Epupa Falls, in Northern Namibia, along Kunene River which marks the border with Angola. There were no men or boys in the village at the time we visited; they were out grazing the cattle and goats.

The lighting conditions were not ideal, but with a fair bit of PP work, I'm not too unhappy with this image.

The picture was taken near mid-day and even with some flash fill, I was unable to get rid of the dappled light in the scene, cast by a tree that was just out of frame. I did a lot of dodging and burning on this shot.

I am interested & wonder what the topic of conversation was between them, you have captured some great expressions.

I would say this is komorebi (sunbeams shining through leaves) but the speckled light is probably filtering through mesh or some sort of shelter, however the effect is quite similar and always worth the challenge of trying to capture. Nicely done, the shadow patterns are also wide enough to experiment with black and white but its easy to visualize just by squinting.

No - just the trees. This was a small Himba settlement. The only thing tall enough to filter the light was the trees.

Same group of girls as in the shot, same trees and same shadow (camera right edge). Lots of straw and mud buildings around too.

Surprised, the shadow patterns were so wide but then the trees are sparse of leaves.
