    Patience rewarded

I have been trying for this sort of shot for at least ten years. Never could get either the free time or the right conditions. We rarely get mist or fog here as the humidity is too low, when we do it tends to be very transient. This last weekend things worked out as the temperature dropped so the snow was actually warmer than the air above leading to a condensation layer just above the ground. The conditions only lasted till just after sunrise, but fortunately were present on both Saturday and Sunday mornings so I was able to get all three planned shots done in one weekend

All work well but the last one has a really spectacular sky and excellent sense of perspective.

Oh my! All 3 of these are just beautiful. I really cannot pick a favorite.

I love the moodiness of the first one, but I think I would clone in the white patch in the top right corner with the dark clouds. Otherwise WOW on all 3

I'm liking #2 best Trevor, but as Geoff says, they all work really well.

I tried click/dragging the LyteBox up; so the sky corner disappeared - but that immediately makes me 'see' something completely different, if you know what I mean.

Just noticed a wee flare spot almost dead centre of the frame which I hadn't seen before. Be worth just obliterating that.

Otherwise, it remains a superb image.

Nice captures, all very good but there's something about the third that does it for me, I think what strikes me is the very warm sky and the cold everything else.

    Thanks all.

I was very happy these worked out. At the time I took #2 and #3 I was fretting about missing the opportunity to shoot #1. All worked out for the best.

All three look like wall hangers to me.
IN the 3rd image there appears to be a thin band of shadow above the hill on the right. It is particularly noticeable in lytebox. I'm wondering if that is just the shadow from the clouds, or if you applied a gradient filter there, or used grad filter?

I was hoping it would escape notice; fat chance with this group. When I processed the image in Capture one I used one mask on the sky and one on the lower area below the hills. i tried using a "fuzzy" margin between the two by decreasing the sharpness of the brush edges and opacity of the brushes at the join between the two masks. Never was truly happy with the margin, however I finally elected to settle on the best compromise. Should I ever print this, I will have to try harder as it is definitely a flaw that bothers me. I suppose another Post processing program would give better results; Capture One is all I have.

I love #3. Maybe a tad more separation between foreground and sky. If not, who cares - it's a keeper for mine.

If you have V11 the masking problem might be solved using grayscale mask and refine

Wow, these are very good. I like the way the fence and the tracks lead to the light at the horizon in #3. Strong foreground, diagonal lines and a nice colour contrast.

I think the sky in #1 can be cropped from the top to give it a calmer and more panoramic look.

Trevor, it's not possible to say much about the processing without access to the original image and knowing exactly what you did, but I'd think that C1 could do what you want quite easily. Did you try a really soft brush at a low opacity setting and/or using gradient masks?

Notwithstanding that, these are 3 superb shots and patience has indeed been rewarded.

All three are impressive, but I particularly like #2. The left hand tree half-hidden in the mist makes it for me.

    Re: Patience rewarded

I'd lose the hillside blue sky in #1 with a pano framing as it does nothing to improve the shot.

When cropping this I flipped back and forth about removing the hillside and sky or leaving it. At the time I leaned toward keeping it because I thought it gave context to the dark shadow in the back, making it obvious it is a hill. However I do agree that it may be a distraction and detracts rather than adds. If I print this I may lean towards the tighter crop; i.e. no bright upper right corner

All three are lovely but the second reminds me of very early mornings on our home farm from my youth.... beautiful!

All three are well worth your efforts in planning and capturing the scenes and the fleeting conditions, well done Trevor.
