Ken, I'm sure that there are lots of people who would see what they consider to be opportunities for improvement but I like it. To me it does have an eye-catching appeal precisely because of its simplicity.

+1 to Geoff's suggestion. While you have not lost shadow detail there, you do have a fairly large and uninteresting "mass" just sitting there.
Another alternative would be to raise the shadow detail. There is a lot data in the image (even as a JPEG), that could be brought out in post. I suspect it was not nearly as dark as this image shows when you took it.
