2018 Project 52, second quarter by Lindsay (CormacD)

Second quarter started. My wife and I will be travelling in Australia for at least 8 weeks by car towing our caravan and plan to get some good shots.

We will be heading south, from where we live near Perth, to the south coast, then turning east and crossing the Nullarbor Plains on the Eyre Highway then heading north through the Red Centre to Darwin. We will be spending some time on the way to Darwin at or near Uluru (Eyre's Rock), in Alice Springs, in Coober Pedy, Katherine etc.

I will be posting the first photo in a few days as we are heading off in the morning and are busy packing.

Esperance on the Southern Ocean Project 52, 2nd Quarter, Lindsay (CormacD)

Stopped for 2 nights at Foreshore Caravan Park in the port town of Esperance on the south coast in Western Australia. There is a big bay with a lot of islands. There are beautiful beaches and a National Park nearby. The old jetty was built in 1938 and abandoned in 1965 and has since been badly neglected, unfortunately. I’ve selected a few scenes below. Have had to wait a few days to get decent signal for the internet as travelling across the Nullarbor Plain.

    #1 Beach at bottom of stairs, 10 April, 1152 am, ISO 100, 18.5 mm, f/7.1, 1/80 s

    # 2 Almost down on the beach, 10April. 12.08 pm, ISO100, 18.5 mm, f/7.1, 1/160 s

Nice scenes, for me the foliage looks soft and distracting and that's only because the wind is blowing and the 1/100-160s shutter speeds aren't fast enough to freeze the movement. You might like the look and it the slight blur can help convey movement but for me the greenery in the first and second image encompasses a significant portion of your composition and also has immediate impact as it resides in the foreground.

Thanks John, on reflection I think you are spot on and the shutter speeds are a little slow, also maybe the aperture could be a touch smaller, I'll watch out for this next time.

Coober Pedy, Opal Mining Town Project 52, 2nd Quarter, Lindsay (CormacD)

Visited Coober Pedy a couple of days ago, opals were first mined there in about 1914 and it continues. The area is in central South Australia in a desert that used to be a massive inland sea about 120 million years ago or so. The opal forming process started back then. The local museum has examples of the ancient marine fossils such as snails, shells an fish. The following selection of photos may give you a bit of an idea of the countryside.

#1 Mullock heaps and holes left by people mining spread over some 70 km.

#2 The Breakaways, is a formation of small hills that are untouched and are part of the ancient sea bed.

#3 The Two Dogs Sleeping, part of the Breakaways formation

#4 The Dog Fence, a fence built in the 19th century some 5700 km across the country to help stop wild native dogs, the dingos, from moving into sheep country and killing them off. This section is on the Moon Plane.

#5 An example of an underground home in Coober Pedy, where some 50% of the people live in underground housing, including hotels, shops and churches. The temperature remains a constant 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.
