Time to quit being a snob and to start exploring JPEG bells and whistles

Time to quit being a snob and to start exploring JPEG bells and whistles

I have tried and tried again to get a good shot of this corner. Nothing really worked. I didn't need sharpness I needed DoF. Today I turned to JPEG with HDR Painting. I kept the manual settings that are my ballpark numbers and had some fun. I do believe that I shall have to learn how to use the JPEG bells and whistles.

Don't forget that those JPEG bells and whitles are nothing more as in-camera post processing. Good luck.

Nothing wrong with getting the most out of your device.

With the current exchange rate the camera was close to 1K Canadian.

Neither HDR nor in-camera processing should have any effect on DOF. In-camera stacking, if your camera has it, would.

Let me rephrase: I needed soothing to capture the texture of the web.

Interesting title. I would have thought one could continue to be a snob and still explore...

At the price you paid, that is a good solid mid-range camera; certainly not an entry level model.

There is nothing wrong with using the JPEG "bells & whistles"; that's what they are there for. That being said, the shot you took does not look like a candidate for HDRI; the dynamic range looks quite muted.

It really is the Sony translucent mirror technology camera. B&H sells it for 599 US. The rest was to get it here and exchange rate.

One may but one doesn't need to.

I didn't want to overdo it.

Sometimes I feel downright guilty that I use so few of the functions on my cameras. Though sometimes when traveling I will make multiple captures of a scene in both RAW and JPEG with in-camera HDR. The RAW version for when I get home and can take the time to process and the JPEG version for instant gratification. More recently when I was having computer issues I even poked around with in-camera post processing(as opposed to the auto processing at time of capture). For those of us with time on our hands and not relying on photography as primary income it's all good

The important factor is your destination, not how you arrive there. If the camera can do a good job with various in-camera JPEG processing systems, why not give it a chance?

I plan on investigating the full potential of my cameras settings. Whether I subsequently use these settings is another matter and depends on how I like the results and if I enjoy using those settings...

Nice one, Brian. Exploring the in-camera jpeg effects can be an entertaining adventure.

So far it has been I use my shots on my blogs and some of the filters might go a ways to help me express my thoughts visually.
