Assassin Fly possibly of the Asilinae sub-family. (1" plus long)

Out of the roughly 6,750 species of Robber Flies this is only the second one I have found in our garden.
ISO 100 ~ Shutter Speed 1.3s ~ F/16 ~ Natural Lighting. A couple of days ago I stuck two twigs in the ground hoping to attract the other smaller species of Robber Flies that I usually shoot. Today this monster was sitting on one of them.

Super shot. The only change I might suggest is to have pumped in a tiny bit of light from the lens direction to gain some extra detail in the body of the insect...

I thought about it long and hard. I could have used a mask to lighten the body but everything else works so well together I didn't want to risk mucking things.

But as I'm a little bit more alert today than last night I'll give it a shot.

This is actually a wee bit of a cheat. This lady is more than twice the size of the other species in our garden. making it a lot easier to get the fine detail

Actually we do the same thing. You find ways to capture the essence of your homeland. I find ways to capture the essence of our garden. If I was still a lighthouse keeper on Ivory Island I might have ended up shooting very differently.
