Looks like a crane fly
I do not believe that the adults crane fly eats/feeds at all (and they do not bite). The larva feeds on decomposing organic material
They are palps which some flies use for feeding.
With craneflies the palp length is a clue to the family. This puts your fly in the long palped group such as Tipulidae (and a few others). Some craneflies have much shorter palps.
But, they are a tricky group to identify and you need some clear views of the wings showing their veins in order to begin this tortuous journey.![]()
What an unusual creature and some interesting comments
A great shot.
Mosquitoes are in fact flies. Anything in the order diptera (which means 'two wings') is a fly.
Nice shot.
Nice one, Brian. Crazy looking critter.
