It looks ever so much like a giant mosquito. But the vestigial wing proclaims it to be a fly. ISO 100 ~ Shutter Speed five s. ~ F/16

I just did a wiki and it is a Crane Fly. Would you happen to know if the two appendages coming out of the snout are for feeding?

I do not believe that the adults crane fly eats/feeds at all (and they do not bite). The larva feeds on decomposing organic material

They are palps which some flies use for feeding.

With craneflies the palp length is a clue to the family. This puts your fly in the long palped group such as Tipulidae (and a few others). Some craneflies have much shorter palps.

But, they are a tricky group to identify and you need some clear views of the wings showing their veins in order to begin this tortuous journey.

    A great shot.

Mosquitoes are in fact flies. Anything in the order diptera (which means 'two wings') is a fly.
