    The pup seems focused on something, at first glance I thought the pup was facing away, you should adjust the shadows and perhaps edit so that viewer focuses on eyes.

    Well composed shot but the dog is either deep in the shadows or underexposed. You could try to lift its shadows and find out if any detail can be brought back.

    Thank you for your advice, I made the photo lighter, especially in the dark part of the puppy. Hopefully this will look better.
    I also cropped the photo a bit.

    The human visual system tends to find out of focus areas in front of the subject distracting, but has no issues with things behind the subject being soft. In this shot, there are a lot of out of focus areas close to the camera. This is taking away from your composition.

    Agree the focus seemed to have concentrated over the grass in front of the puppy. The AF system chose this area because the puppy was in a low light area, with poor contrast. The AF needs light and contrast to perform as intended.
