Is there any advantage in purchasing an 84mm graduated filter vs a 100mm?

Presumably you don't already own the filter mount/holder system? 100mm is better for wider angles. 84mm is less bulky and the filters might be marginally less expensive.
+1 to Dan's comments. The other advantage is that 100mm is the standard holder size across a number of manufacturers including Lee, Formatt Hitech, NISI, etc, so it is possible to mix and match from the various manufacturers. The other sizes are non-standard and you will likely have to stick with that particular filter supplier.
Yes the wider the lens the more you have to be careful that the filter holder doesn't cause vignetting, particularly if it is thick enough to hold several filters. I used to have a 10-20mm lens with a 77mm filter thread. That's getting pretty close to 85mm. Also with the 100mm size, you have more room for adjustment of a gnd filter up and down.

Thanks Dan. I have not purchased holders nor filters as yet, but am leaning toward 100mm.
Thanks Manfred. 100mm sounds more logical if I'm to keep my purchasing options open.
Thanks Dave. I think I will opt for 100mm
The one thing you haven't told us unless I missed it is the lens you plan to use it on?
Ultra Wide angle lenses usually require a 150mm filter system. (Lee & Nisi have versions that spring top mind)
100mm as said is the universal standard for most lenses though.
Thanks Ian. The lenses I will use it on are:
55 -250mm Canon
17-70mmSigma , most often
11-16 Tokina. Occasionally
Joe - I just popped the Lee Foundation kit holder on my Tokina 11 -16mm lens. I have it set up so that it will take three filters PLUS a polarizer holder. I used the Lee 77mm WA (wide angle) adapter.
I've put it on a crop-frame Nikon, which is a bit wider angle than your Canon. No vignetting at all with the setup unless I put on the polarizer. There I have noticeable vignetting until I hit 14mm. I haven't tried it, but suspect that taking things down to the more standard 2-filter slot would eliminate most if not all of that.
Thanks Manfred. That is good to know. I did not want to go larger than 100 mm.
