Helpful Posts: I'm not really all that interested in photographing birds, but the Pileated Woodpecker is one of the nicer looking birds in the area. When one landed on our bird feeders and then moved over to a small fruit tree when I got too close, I had my camera ready and got a few shots of him. They are a large bird; 40 - 50 cm / 16" - 19" tall.

Nice catch, Manfred. I didn't realize those guys lived in northern climes. They were relatively common where I grew up in South Carolina. I haven't seen one in years and years.

It's number 2 for me! Well done! Always preferable to have wildlife in a natural setting. Sometimes the only way to capture a bird pic is while they are sitting on the feeders but wonderful when you can get them as you have!
My daughter has as occasional one in the woods near her home. When they pound the trees, it reverberates like the sound of a drum!

Occasionally we get a really dumb one that seems to think it will get some insects by banging away on the spark arrester on the fireplace chimney. The loud banging of beak on metal is annoying throughout the house.

I have Northern Flickers bang on the gutter flashing and chimney caps at my house all the time. Sounds like a construction riveter going to work. Loud and annoying.
