    Another filter question...

The Markjass post reminded me of a problem I am encountering with one of my Schneider B&W CPL filters. The front filter ring has become extremely difficult to turn which really makes it hard to adjust the polarizing effect.

I have had filters bind in adapter rings and even on lenses but this is the first time I have ever had a CPL filter become hard to turn.

I was thinking of using some lubricant but, am wary of the lubricant seeping onto the glass of the filter itself.

Any ideas on how to mitigate this problem...

Maybe dry graphite? Mine is in a small soft plastic or rubbery tube that you squeeze, and miniature flakes of powdered graphite are blown out the nozzle, which can be aimed at the threads or tight bearing surfaces. If any flakes get on the glass instead of where you want them, they can be blown off easily.

Any good hardware store should have it.

    Good luck.

If it is binding, then some contaminant has gotten between the part of the ring that mounts to the lens and the part that rotates. This does not sound like a lubrication issue. I would check with the local B+W dealer / importer regarding how to resolve this issue. My guess is that the unit requires disassembly and cleaning.

I don't know how B+W supports their products, but when I had a somewhat similar issue with a Heliopan filter, I was asked to mail it to the distributor and it was returned to me in working order about a week later.

Thank you. I had not thought about contacting B+W. This is a spare filter which I received as part of a package of gear that I bought a while ago. This was an incidental part of the package so I never really paid that much attention to the rotation problem...
