The human visual system is drawn to bright or contrasty areas in an image. If this is not the subject, the composition is not working as well as it should. If the bright area is at the edge of the image, the viewer's eyes will follow it out of the frame; not something that the photographer wants.

The child's face (the most important part of a portrait) is in shadow, and although you have brightened it up a a degree, it is really not all that interesting due to the flat lighting. A bit of fill light and toning down the highlights would have gone a long way to improve this shot.
