Sunrise (and Sunset) in the Maldives

All,

I woke up early in the morning to catch a Sunrise in the Maldives - overall the sun did not fully cooperate, but there is a nice serenity in watching the sun come up alone on the beach. It did hide behind the clouds once and I found this image to be very compelling I feel like I could get more out of it in PP than I already have, but any more might be over the top.

1. ISO200, F/8, 1/400s at 24mm


I find that sunsets are easier for me - no getting up early. These are two examples of where afterwards I see what I should have done - IMO I think I need POV of Image 3 in Image 2.

2. ISO200, F/11, 4s at 24mm and 10 Stop ND Filter . I am not a fan of the way the sun came out in this one - seems a bit distorted, maybe a smaller aperture would have been a better choice.


3. ISO200, f/8, 1/1250s, at 24mm I like this POV better, be nice to have this with a ND filter to smooth out water a bit.

Erik,

You show us 3 shots with the same focal length and probably from the same place. But the vertical lines are different in the three. Position the camera so that those vertical lines are vertical. Pay attention to that. The shots have potency.

George - Thanks for he feedback. Actually 2 and 3 are same spot just minutes apart during sunset, while 1 is at sunrise.

I agree on Vertical Lines - frankly I am not sure if it is “Maldivian” craftmanship causing the vertical lines on the shelter to look off - I leveled the horizon on the camera to start.

Leveling the camera on the horizon is just one direction, let's say rotating around the z-ax. The y-ax is changing the angle like for pano's. And the x-ax is tilting the lens up or down. And that last one is causing those non vertical lines.
In your first picture you tilted the lens up to catch the clouds.
I think it's not easy with that minimal references in this case.

Allways try to avoid it.
A water level will be helpfull, a 3-way water level. And on the right place
In a city you will have many vertical and horizontal help lines.
Tilt shift lenses will not solve this problem. They give you more possibilities. I never worked with them.
The perspective distortion of those vertical lines are also depending on the distance to the subject. If you could step backwards and use a longer focal length that distortion will become less.

Nice subject, Erik. I think the first one needs to have the subject separated from the background. The distant island is poking out of the breakwater.

Like other I think no.2 is the best of the lot. And agree that the POV in no.3 with the longer exposure may have been interesting. I honor you for your commitment to rise early for the sunrise. Overall nicely done.
