For as long as we have lived here we have now and then spotted Kingfishers in our garden. Once we put in two ponds they became regular visitors. Three nights ago I noticed a dead bird hanging upside down above the lower pond. It appeared to have been caught in a bat trap and broken free, trailing a length of line behind it. This line seemed to have got caught in our bamboo and the Kingfisher slowly died hanging upside down. Bad enough. But not as ugly as the reality.
The reality is that someone either stole this bird from the nest or caught it in a Bat trap. They then tied it (note the green line attached to the leg) to a thin bamboo branch stuck in the ground.
Eventually the Kingfisher managed to pull the branch out of the ground and fly off. As it was flying the bamboo got caught in our bamboo and bird died hanging upside down.
The other possibility is that someone caught the Kingfisher, killed it, allowed it to rot and then placed it in our yard to place a curse on us.
Either possibility means that this beautiful bird died because of human arrogance and stupidity.
This morning I had our gardener cut the dead Kingfisher down and photographed it in the studio after apologizing, offering prayer and offering our garden for the Kingfishers spirit as a place of refuge.
I tried a new to me post processing technique. I used the HDR slider 3 times and got an interesting effect.
