    Reminiscence

Hi there! It has been two years since my last post. I have been busy lately. This image below was even taken December 2016. But, I would just like to ask for your C&C if it was your image. How can I make this good if not better. Thank you!

    Hi Jay-Ar,

Composition would be more fitting if subject gazing out to sea were more prominently lighted and filled the frame a bit more. As displayed the flare of the sun overwhelms the composition, the darkly silhouetted land masses and subject has to be searched for.

It's a well done image from both a compositional and technical standpoint. I like the way the leafing lines created by the slop of the trees as well as the waves coming ashore lead directly to your subject. You've also handled the technical aspects of a back lit shot well; you've reduced the issues resulting from the lens flare / veiling flare that are countered quite nicely.

I do question some of your camera settings. A 17mm focal length is quite wide so the depth of field will be quite deep, even at moderate aperture settings. Shooting at f/22 means you are definitely getting diffraction softening in the image and ISO 640 is not terribly high, but you are still not pulling the best out of your camera's sensor.

Another thing I might want to consider is opening up the shadow detail some more. There is data there and I'd be tempted to pull more of it out and burn back in post, as required.

Thank you. There are at least four leading lines here I intentionally aimed for. 1. Sun and leaf to the subject. 2. Wave line to the subject. 3. horizon of the sea to the subject. 4. rocks (left) to the subject. And bonus is the rocks (right) to the subject.

For the f/22, the reason for that is the sunstar. I can't remember if I tried below f/22. But maybe this the best image of the set. For ISO, I usually let the camera pick one for me. ISO was set to Auto, if I remember it correctly.

I could have, but I did not. Silhouette is the third intent I had for this image.

    So, my primary intentions were:
    1. Sunstar
    2. Leading lines
    3. Silhouette

The rest, I let the camera assist me in any possible way.

Thank you so much for that C&C. I'll keep those in mind.
