    Aden Renate - B&W

I have been having some technical issues when printing on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta paper; print head crashes. After a bit of research I found that the paper is just over 0.4mm thick, rather than the "recommended" setting of 0.3mm. All of the head crashes seem to occur only with the Photo Black ink.

To ensure that I have indeed solved the problem, I converted a colour image I have of my youngest daughter to B&W which used a lot of Photo Black ink and managed to pull off a crash-free print. This is a good thing as the Hahnemühle are premium priced papers, but give stunning results.

Now that I have created a good B&W portrait, I thought I might post it. I don't use broad lighting in a lot of my work, but Aden is quite slim and it works well on her.

Good to know about that problem and what it was that causing it.

Beautiful use of light. It really does mould her skin and features beautifully.

I have 4 areas for loading papers and two are designated for thicker papers, always have to consult the manual before purchasing and loading papers so I've experienced the same issues. Nice image.

Thanks John. I had already tried that. The loading positions are more related to how much the paper can bend going through the printer. The most flexible papers can take a fairly hard bend and some of the others, much less so. That is why there are different feeds (I have four as well on my printer).

I've had my printer for 6 years and this is the first time I'd run into this issue (and have done hundreds of prints). I have used both Epson and third party papers before without this problem showing up.

Print head crashes are not related to the feed, but rather the platen gap.

Thanks Donald. This was my first test of my Godox 120mm deep parabolic softbox. It's nice and portable and works well with my Godox Witstro AD-360 bare bulb flash. It throws a good direct light, but I tend to like the look of a more feathered light, so more testing (hopefully today) is in order.

    Manfred,

I purchased a variety pack which had a few thick sheets and when I placed inside the paper cassette the printer wouldn't feed, I even tried changing the paper type but printer still would not accept. On my printer (P5000) only the paper cassette bends the sheet, the front and back loading feeds and the roll feed only gives a slight bend to the paper.

I have not used the P5000, so cannot comment on it. I have used its "siblings" the P600 and the P800. If I recall correctly, the settings are similar to what I can do with my 3880 and I can select which of the paper feed channels to use in the printer menu.
