One afternoon we went for a drive up the mountains that are featured in the Week 23 images and walked around some of the run-down and derelict workings. There's not a lot to see, but the first two give an idea of what was and what now is:
The first shows the red stratified waste from one of the mines with the ruins of the buildings that supported the activities:
and the second is part of the now rusted winding gear:
We went on to drive down to the coastal village of Portman, originally a key harbour for transport of materials related to the mining activities, but currently receiving a substantial investment to rebuild as a recreational seaside town:
