Re: Lazy Summer Afternoon
looks like a nice day! You might consider making some adjustments to provide a bit more distinction in the midtones. If you have Photoshop this can be done by adjusting clarity a little. Using spot adjustments of clarity in the water and sky will add some additional life to those broad areas which now are somewhat bland.

For me, Bruce, those out of focus leaves on the left have to go. You could still end up with a 4 x 5 or square ratio and a nice clean composition.

Is this any better?

Re: Lazy Summer Afternoon
Composition seems better to me. Good thought to reduce the sky and focus on the boat. See what you think of a crop that is more horizontal, losing more of the top and focusing even more on the travel of the boat.

Re: Lazy Summer Afternoon
In addition to providing subject matter those pontoon boats are awesome platforms for photography

Those crops look better to me. Which is best depends on what you want from this scene. Showing the background scenery plus a boat, or concentrating on the boat plus people and losing the scenery context.
But with the second option I would have been willing to lose a fraction more from the bottom to have all of that house roof showing in the background.
