Nice ones.
Good series Brian - and the third shot is really superb.
Okay, Brian, I am convinced about the difference a macro lens makes - these are a great series. But just out of curiosity (as the post mentions the curious!) what range of distance were these images taken from and what would have been the actual size of the spider? Indicative approximations would be fine.

I always forget something. The furthest shot was a paced six feet away. Middle shot was about one foot away. The macro was real close to four inches from the end of the lens to the spider. That puts me in the 1x1 area.
The bamboo the spider is nesting on is a measured five inches wide. Which makes the spider about 3" leg tip to leg tip.
That additional information about the distances helps and puts in perspective what I have read: that a macro lens these days is quite versatile, so much so that some macro lenses are no longer designated as such because they have a wider application (even for portraits, for example).
One day I may borrow one and experiment. Meanwhile I shall continue to enjoy your posts.
Thanks for taking the time to assess the distances.
