    Boabs at night

    Hi all,
I thought I'd share a selection of Boab trees I took recently on a clear night in the Northern Territory.

    Under the milky way
    15 mm; 20s at f/2.8; ISO 4000

By the campfire light. The bright "star" was actually a slither of crescent moon setting.
    15mm; 30s at f/5.6; ISO 800

Light Painted - same tree as above about 3 hours later. I had left my camera to capture a series for star trails and I light painted the tree and grasses as I returned to my camera. I've yet to process and combine the star trail images, but hope to get back to them soon.
    15mm; 30s at f/5.6; ISO 800

    C&C always welcomed

    Cheers

Needs viewing with the Lightbox view to show all the fine detail in these images.

Nice set, Trace. I prefer night skies like this rather than star trails.

You are welcome on the shooting info. The stars were numerous and as I was intending to blend for trails as opposed to a time lapse of the milky way, I really only wanted to collect the brightest stars without too much clutter, so chose the western sky and kept the ISO lower and closed my aperture more than I would typically for my night sky images.
Hope you get clear skies soon. I'll be trying to make the most of mine in the coming few months as I'll be moving back to the higher light pollution of South-east Queensland at the end of the year.

I do too. A friend challenged me to try a star trail for something different (for me), and so I did, (well I will have once I process it :-/ ). I couldn't help myself though, I ensured I still got a milky way and got in this bit of light painting to have some balance to the pics I brought home. It was an excellent night under the stars really.

I didn't know those baobs or boabs where in Australie too. Well 1 kind of them as I learned.

I think start trails or timelaps of stars are wonderful to show you where you're: just a little place in the universum and on the earth. But I agree it's difficult to make nuances in them.

    Re: Boabs at night

I am especially drawn to the first two as I have few places where such foreground foliage or objects provide such drama. I do want to shoot again this month over at a lighthouse area that has very little light interference but must wait out the rainy season...Well Done Trace!

How long did you paint the tree in the second shot?

Thanks George. The night sky and existence, a recipe for deep reflection

Thanks Chris. It was painted very briefly, from about 50m away with a head torch. Just a brief on and then off with torch; perhaps two seconds.

    Re: Boabs at night

Great series Trace. I envy #1 I have yet to get an image of the milky way that I am happy with. Hopefully I will be heading North and West again soon to skies unpolluted by city lights (but only when it gets a lot warmer at night).

    Re: Boabs at night

Very nicely captured! IMO, star trails and fireworks shots really benefit from having terrestrial objects in the foreground. These Boab trees certainly add to the uniqueness of the images...
