I'm having a bit of a retro moment and have returned to aperture priority. I'll see if it gives me equal or better exposure.

Interesting subject, Brian, but I think it needs to have a lot of the background cropped out. I'd suggest pulling the left side in to about the middle of the white thing, and bringing the right side in to the inner edge of the green stick.
