    Marathon Series - The Rain

I have not posted in a while so I thought I would share some of my favourites from our annual marathon run this last Saturday.

These three sum up the weather for the majority of my four and a half hours shooting

    Did you use a tripod?
I know a lot of people who would be happy with that rain

Good set, Grahame. It's nice to see rain still falls somewhere in the world.

    Thanks George.

I'm curious why you ask if a tripod was used?

All my shots this year were handheld as I did not want the added hassle of repeatedly taking a mono-pod on and off and putting it down on the dirty wet ground. I spend much of my time, sitting, kneeling or lying down.

These three were a few of many taken from the refuge of the sound system tent when trying to overcome the boredom of shooting people crossing the finish line whilst waiting for the rain to ease

Thanks Greg. There seems to be no shortage of rain and cloud here for the past couple of months.

    They're beautiful sharp and 1/200 at 200mm.

The look on the runner's faces says it all. They don't appear to be any happier with the weather than you are. At least they are not overheating...

We all get into these types of shooting situations from time to time; show up and the shots we were hoping to capture are just not there.

I used my (new to me) Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 for all shots taken just after sunrise when I was then able to finally cease using flash.

Looking through all the results the vast majority range between 1/200 to 1/320 and failures seem to be due more to missed focus or too shallow DoF. I had suspected the VR on this lens was not as good as the 80-400 but now I'm convinced it's ok.

Yes the weather was a bonus for the runners, some years it has been absolutely sweltering.

Fortunately I managed to achieve most of my goals and soon learnt the best way of keeping the camera relatively dry with what I had, a big bonus being not having an 'extending' zoom.

Welcome back. Rainy season has its blessings but doing a marathon in a soaked bat man costume probably isn't one of them
