It's a Tree spider that's guarding its nest. She has been on the bamboo for a couple of weeks. If she stays around you'll be seeing more of her.

Hi Brian - I really enjoy the close-ups but I wonder if you could post a pic of the entire spider? She is definitely a wonderful creature for photos!

I am so glad that I don't see one like her around here! <yikes>

Brian, how large are these spiders? Real monsters or macro monsters?

Macro monsters. At her widest she is just a little less than 1/4" wide

They are wide spread but if Wiki is right they aren't in North America. Here's a shot from about 6' back. The bamboo is 5" wide

This shot is about 1' back

It's just possible that I was wrong. I know how could someone as brilliant as I am, a very stable genius, ever be wrong? But it looks like I was.

What i have been referring to as an egg sac may be her lunch. Seems they wait for a meal to pass by and then encircle it with silk trapping it on the tree or bamboo.

She really isn't too large - just really fierce looking! I'll take a look at your blog to satisfy the rest of my curiosity! Thanks!
