    Kane and Maki

I don't post a lot of family shots, but my daughter, her 2-year old son and her in-laws are currently visiting us, so we will be visiting a lot of tourist spots over the next couple of weeks while they are here.

Today, we headed down to Upper Canada Village, one of my favourite places to take out of country visitors to. It is made up of a lot of historic buildings that were due to flooded by the construction of the St Lawrence Seaway in the mid 1950s. The relocated buildings, from around the time of Confederation, where Canada became an independent country in 1867.

This shot of my grandson, Kane, and his Japan-based grandmother, Maki was taken at Family Activity Centre, where people can dress up in period costume. Kane, in his Crocs did not quite get the period look 100% spot on, but I do like the image I captured. It used a blend of ambient light and camera-mounted flash bounced off the wall and ceiling behind me.

Thanks for giving us a glimpse of your family. It is a photo you will enjoy regardless of any critique...

I totally agree with #5 and #6 above. Nevertheless, for me the background is rather distracting.

    Cheers.

Agreed, but the background is part of the story. These are period costume collections, some of which the subjects are wearing.

Given the location and shooting conditions, this was the only place where I could light the subjects well and there was not enough space to throw the the background out of focus. Location photography is challenging at the best of times.

I hope to get some shooting time with Kane in a more controlled environment with Kane this weekend. Shooting active two year olds is always a challenge.
