Eclipse of the Moon (Blood Moon)

These are not technically brilliant photos and are limited by the budget Nikon 70-300mm lens I have (on a D610) but I thought I would post for interest. The eclipse started about 4:30AM Eastern Australia time and was full by about 5:30AM or so when the red colour became reasonably strong. The light was not overly bright though and the difficulty is getting a short enough exposure that minimised blur caused by the moon's movement. About 2.5 sec was the slowest speed I could get away with but a bit faster would have been better. This could only be achieved with a faster lens (mine was f/5.6).

The other difficulty during the partial eclipse is the vast difference in brightness across the moon.

Sadly here in deepest darkest North Yorkshire during the lunar eclipse all I could see were clouds, more coulds and a lot of lightening.

Nicely done Dave! Sadly I'm in the same camp as Peter - all set up but no place to go, as the only thing I could see was cloud, then more cloud ..

Hi Dave, So great to see you had clear skies too. I've had very similar results to your images before. I ended up deciding to do the opposite than what I usually read, and leaned towards under-exposing. I let my shadows, including the shadowed portions of the moon, go to black in favour of preserving all highlights. Can get noisy quickly though

I liked your photos. The last picture is very good and the first two served to show the limitations of the dynamic range of digital cameras when compared to human eyes. Even a good full frame DSLR camera like the Nikon D610 (dynamic range = 14.4 EV according to DxOMark) is not able to achieve the performance of human eyes.
