I’m wondering whether this is affected by sensor design. I can’t experiment; I am traveling with both of my Canon bodies but forgot to bring a cable or card reader.

Dan, all I can think is that 'something' has to 're-arrange' what has been already captured on the sensor and move the data around in a set pattern (variable) by expanding or contracting 'areas'.

    Edit : Additional info

I can now confirm the 'patterns' are achievable using the same sharpening sequence when undertaking Lens Distortion corrections within PS, so it appears they are always there when any distortion adjustment has been undertaken but under 'normal' circumstances not generally seen.

    Grahame,

that's what I assume, and for that reason, I would expect the effect to be similar with other brands of sensors with similar densities, but I think it would be interesting to test this out.
