    Deep purple

Everyone was remarking at the deep color of these thistles at the LBJ Wildflower Center the other day. I swear this shot is not oversaturated:

Quite a remarkable purple color which I just had to check, and it is indeed not over-saturated! Nice shot.

I'm still shaking my head over this. Anyhow, I forgot to mention that the black blob at the bottom left of the lowest thistle is a big bumblebee...

Are they thistles or sea holly?

I grow a silvery form of sea holly and know that there several blueish species

Found an I.D. for it. It's called false purple thistle, and formally known as Leavenworth's eryngo. It is an annual with a leafy stem, broadly branched in the upper portion. Almost the entire plant has some shade of purple. Flowers are minute, purple, and mingled with small, spiny bracts in an elongated, terminal, head-like cluster.

It certainly is a stunning shade of purple but I think it is the contrasting yellow flowers in the background that makes this shot.
