    Bannisters - Dunedin Railway Station

I took this last year, and now looking back wondered why I did not take multiple images. Easy to be wise in retrospect. I like it, but what do you think please?

I have to agree with you, Jim - why didn't you take more? There is some great detail to be explored in that bannister. If it were mine, I would crop the bottom up to the 3rd stair to remove the horizontal line in the background and focus attention more on that exquisite shape in the upper half.

    Hi Jim:

I agree that this may well have deserved more images, but I like this one a lot. That railway station is, IMHO, the crown jewel of downtown Dunedin, perhaps apart from the courthouse, which I gather has been beautifully restored. I am glad they use the platforms for fashion shows - it produces a great atmosphere.

If that's a railway station I would like to see more of it.

Very snakelike, interiors like these are great subjects and I usually like to have an UWA lens with me to capture as much space as possible.

The image works for me Jim, I agree with Trevor in #3 above, regarding this building. It along with the Museum that is quite near it were certainly the highlights of my stay in Dunedin. From memory the Court House that Trevor mentioned was shrouded in scaffold when we were there.

Nice image. Have you tried a B&W conversion? Seems to me that this image is all about lines and shapes.

Ooh yes I’m with Dan, B&W would be terrific I think.

I lived in Dunedin for my Radiography training years....being a student, the architecture of the area was wasted on us!

Ditto. This speaks mono to me as well. I also agree with the suggested crop. An intriguing image none the less.

Many thanks to you all, much appreciated. I have taken on board the suggestions and here is my best effort so far, but looks a bit murky. With more work I should be able to tidy up, I hope. Maybe too much structure? It is great to get feedback.

The tighter crop has created something different.

I preferred the original rendition/crop but I think the image works well in B&W.

Does the bright white soffit (underside) of the staircase draw too much attention away from the balustrade/banister?

Staircases……...Never easy things to capture effectively.

Obviously an interesting subject that you could spend ages attempting different angles on.

That does it for me. The composition becomes stronger because of the interrelationship between the curves of the stair and the bannister. It also works as a mono image.
