Visiting the Gannets with the Canon 7DII+100-400II+Extender1.4III

It's nest building time at Muriwai beach. The gannets are coming in for their summer breeding period, so there is action as the birds pair off, mate and start building nests. I made it for an hour or so last week on a windy day and shot with the Canon 7D MkII, using the EF 100-400MkII and 1.4MkIII extender. This gave me a FoV Equivalent to 224-896mm.

I was really impressed with how the kit handled the conditions:

This is the original shot I took

The same shot cropped to concentrate on the eye.

    Settings: 560mm, 1/500sec, f/8, ISO-200

Not a bad piece of kit I think.

Very nice, Trev! Don't think I have seen an image as close up as the bottom one, before - impressive. Am glad that they are back, I keep meaning to go there and then procrastinate. At the time I would really have gone they had left very early for some reason last year.

    Hi Jim:

I am trying to get out there a couple of times each month, weather and commitments permitting, to document the season throughout its cycle. I probably started a wee bit late, but there are no chicks yet, just a few eggs I think.

Here are a couple of shots with the same kit from last year.

If you are going to the colony send me a PM and we can catch up - the cafe serves great coffee!

Impressive results, Trev. What was the distance to subject?

Some really nice captures. I love these birds. We have a large colony at a place called Bempton Cliffs. I have only been once with a view to capturing some in vogue Puffins and ended up photographing the Gannets instead.
