A new direction for my image-making

This isn't going to win any prizes and will likely not be printed, but it is a special image ... to me. For this is my first ever infrared image.

I have had my Canon 5DMkIV converted with a 720nm filter following my seeing that IR didn't just have to be about white foliage and dark skies.

I am looking forward enormously to my adventures with IR.

Any comments about the image, or about infrared, will be welcome.

Well done! Beats my first try by a yard or two

How do you focus? Manual or AF?

I guess the AF sensor remains as-is i.e. tuned to visible light, leaving you only with the difference as found on old lenses ...

What WB do you use? On my full-spectrum SD14 I find Incandescent as good as anything with Custom pretty hard to obtain.

It's a custom white balance set by the company that did the conversion.

But then you have to make sure that Photoshop/Lightroom, or whatever your using, can go as low as you need on the WB to render a neutral WB for finishing.

I do prefer B&W photography but I do not think it works with infrared. It is neither one thing nor the other in B&W. In colour infrared can be quite striking to my way of thinking. Sorry Donald that is only my opinion.

Thanks to John, Olé and Ted. I'm surprised that more people didn't comment. Is no-one else doing IR photography?

Probably because many of us are just not as clever as you. Nice capture though. You would have to be the master of B&W captures. As for IR? Beyond me and I confess did not understand any of the hi tech posts above. I have enough trouble coping with basic English and find Urdu beyond my ken to comprehend. Nice work Sir D.

I did not comment on your photo because it looks like another of your great B & W. Nothing in the picture suggests IR to me. You might have added an arrow to your quiver but are aiming, very effectively, at the same target.

That is also my experience but I'm not into B&W. I have one camera set up for full-spectrum work and can filter visible light, IR by putting filters on the lens. What I find with my camera (has a Foveon sensor) is a loss of contrast or DR which requires a lot of work in post to get that "contrasty" B&W look. On the other hand, it can be interesting to extract the three Foveon raw's layer images separately and work on those instead - of no interest to most of us though.

Curves are for bare sensor, no UV/IR blocking. Red layer goes up to over 1100nm; the other two layers have some IR response too.

As to IR false color, I like to do color-tinting proportional to luminosity rather than going for the stark B&W look. Owners of ordinary cameras do similar by channel-swapping, I've read.

Members are welcome to poke around in my site's IR folder:

    http://kronometric.org/phot/ir/

This full-spectrum one's in there somewhere, enough to put anyone off for life

Personally, I struggle with the actual concept of "white balance" when capturing invisible energy such as IR. I guess I'm too accustomed to seeing a white reference such as CIE D65 (6504K) in the middle of the classic visible light diagram:

Since IR radiation appears nowhere on the diagram, I wonder what "white balance" really means in the context of IR??

I have converted my old Olympus Pen Mini last year. Full spectrum, no filter in front of the sensor so I use one on the lens most of the time. It's quite fun, I need to use it more often.

I like IR when there are blue skies that will darken considerably, accentuating white fluffy clouds...

Honestly Donald, I love IR photography. It's unique and artistic. Your image is well done, yet I am not sure I see very strong IR aspects to it. Maybe people go overboard when exploring this type of photography? (very black skies and white foilage... which may be the intent in some cases). I have an IR filter and film for my film camera, I just have not gotten to use it yet.
I really look forward to seeing what you can create.

    Thank you.

IR is like HDR in the sense that unless it's full blown and shows that it's obviously IR/HDR then people wonder why you do it.

The art and skill is presenting an image that doesn't draw attention to how it was produced, but is a work of art - period.

The only reason I got into IR was when I saw that it didn't have to be white trees and black skies. It is a method of bringing out the grey tones of an image wonderfully well.

Are you finding any focusing error due to the longer wavelengths, now that you've used it a bit, Donald? (I'm assuming that the AF/metering module was not modified during the conversion.)

How is that working out? Must be some pretty coarse multipliers to get rid of that "red" look ...

Yes, the AF module was modified. I am not finding any focusing error at all all. It is just like using autofocusing as I did previous.

Nope. The white balance correction done at modification caters for all that. I can take the image straight out of camera and begin working on that without the need to download and apply the Adobe DNG Profile Editor that was mentioned in the coarse in www.lynda.com at https://www.lynda.com/Lightroom-tuto.../560103-4.html

    Sounds good to me.

Thanks for the interesting link. First time I've heard of DNG conversion in connection with IR work.
