Lens Rentals says keep your old Canon 70-200MkII...

Lens Rentals are famous not only for their product and service delivery, but their ability to show the insides of lenses and cameras. They often post very detailed descriptions of the anatomy of such devices and in this case they did a tear-down of both the mark II and mark III versions of the highly-regarded Canon EF L 70-200 IS USM.

As a result they say keep your Mk II or buy one if you can get a good price. I had already decided to keep my mark II...

Hi Trev, I read this review via another forum. My interpretation of the review is that the only thing that differs between the Mk11 to Mk111 is the fluoride coating on the front and rear elements.
So I shall not be rushing to spend the children’s inheritance on the Mk111 version.

Lens Rentals is also a good source of reliability data for cameras/lenses. And as I recall from last time I looked at their analysis one of the most frequently repaired lenses per hour of usage in both Canon and Nikon lineups is the 70-200mm f2.8 VR/IS.

I am also quite happy with my original Mark-I 70-200mm f/4L IS. The new Mark-II version just doesn't bring enough to the table to make me even desire to "upgrade"...

Not sure if the original post was referring to the f2.8 or f4 version, but I, too, have no reason to think of upgrading from the Mk1 version. I have noted elsewhere that the f4 version is hopeless when it comes to infrared. But there no indication that the upgrade will be any better.

    Hi Donald
The article was referring to the f2.8 MkII vs the f2.8 MkIII version
