Bit of a saga. Up on the fells above where I live is my happy hunting ground for wildlife, mainly birds. I have wanted to catch a Lapwing in flight for some time and if you know the species, you will know how skittish they are. When I spotted this individual, I settled down for an opportunity with bean bag on gate, expecting her to take to the air for the other end of the field in order to put some distance between us. However she stood her ground and started calling. I soon found out why when her brood came out of the long grass, waddling for all they were worth towards her. Meanwhile Dad was flying top cover making a hell of a row.

A couple of weeks later, same field and probably the same bird but only one chick answering the call.

Good set, John. I haven't seen one these birds before. The markings seem to give it a remarkably expressive face.
