Never put a camera and a bottle of water in the same bag!

Oh yes. Guess who did it?

Just had the e-mail back from the repairers, Johnstone's of Glasgow - "CAMERA IS BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR DUE TO SIGNIFICANT MOISTURE DAMAGE. "

Which camera? The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100.

What a complete idiot! Never closed the bottle of water properly. The camera went for a swim for about half-an-hour.

Now the irony is that this happened in the same week as the DMC-LX100 MkII is announced.

Going to lie down in a darkened room.

I seem to recall you had an even more serious water incident a wee while back ...

No, don't think so. That was a concrete kerbstone problem!

Yes, my wife pulled a similar move when we were visiting Peru 12 or 13 years ago with a similar outcome to yours. My condolences, but as I said to her at the time, it was a problem that could be fixed by throwing some money at it. This is exactly what we ended up doing...

Trying to tell myself that I don't really need a compact, but it's not working!

Oops - age-related behaviour on my part.

Water is dangerous Look at the fish in the markets. They all used to swim in the water and now they are dead

Hmmm. Right when a perfect replacement is announced on the market. Sounds like foul play. Not sure if the age-related lapse is a valid defense. Though it should be.

It's no joking matter. There is a website supported by a group of researchers trying to raise awareness of the dangers associated with a chemical compound found in water all over the globe, namely dihydrogen Monoxide. Here's an excerpt:

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:

Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
    Contributes to soil erosion.
Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

Condolences, Donald. I bought wife an LX-7 a couple years ago; no danger to the camera - she hasn't used it yet ...

Owtch. And this is why I am so happy that my Kata backpack has an external mesh water bottle pocket.

Same here, although I did carry mine in the past like Donald.

Donald, every cloud has a silver lining, I suspect you would have been distraught had it been your flask of single malt that had leaked in the bag .
There must be something about Panasonic compacts, I was asked to hand one (in its carry case) to my Daughter in Law. Unfortunately the case wasn't zipped up. The camera went for a swim in the kitchen sink!!!

Imagine - if the camera was killed by swimming in whisky. That's my planned exit route!

Donald, what was the actual damage. Fresh water will dampen everything but I can't see it causing corrosion. Shorted battery perhaps damaging components. I only ask because the cure for drowned smart phones is very often to immerse them in a tub of uncooked rice in order to draw off the moisture. Worth trying????

    John - Don't know.

If Johnstone's said:-"CAMERA IS BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR DUE TO SIGNIFICANT MOISTURE DAMAGE, " I accept that. I couldn't tell you what was wrong with it other than it was dead with a new, non-soaked battery in it.

I am reminded of Hollywood movies where water gets on to a car battery resulting in huge sparks and a violent explosion!

Pardon my cynicism but it's almost like your drinking water was pure acid or summats. I'd say that if they had washed out your camera with surgical spirits (of course a non-standard procedure) there would had been a chance that the LX100 would have sprung back into life.

I'm rebelling against the popular view that plain water can "short things out" or somehow cause instant damage to plastics and metals and chips. Against which there are many instances where cell-phones get immersed and come out working perfectly well.

This post is somewhat OT and does contain some exaggeration ...

I am sincerely sorry for your misfortune.

Looking on the bright side of the coin - it could have been far worse.

It could have been a bottle of Single Malt Scotch, not sealed properly.
