A7iii and Metabones rental

I am interested in the Sony A7iii camera BUT (and that is a big BUT!) only if it functions decently well with my Canon glass. Some of the L glass that I would like it to work with would be the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and 70-200mm f/4L IS. There are also three very decent (but non-L) Canon lenses with which I want to see just how well it works... These lenses are the 35mm f/2 IS, the 85mm f/1.8 and the 100mm f/2.8 macro.

The areas in which I am interested in are: speed and accuracy of auto focus and just how well the various auto focus functions of the A7iii: such as face detect and eye focus will work.

I have heard that the A7iii has the best capability for using Canon lenses and adapters but, I have been scouring the Internet and YouTube and have not decided definitely just how well the combination of A7iii and MC-11 or Metabones will work.

Instead of buying the camera and adapter and being disappointed in the functionality with my lenses, I am considering renting the A7ii and both the Metabones V and Sigma MC-11 adapters from Lensrentals. The total cost will be $172 USD for the week but, expensive as this is, it is less expensive than buying gear which will not suit my needs.

Not sure I understand the OP. Are you interested in the Sony in general and want to test the above mentioned functions to see if acceptable? Or are you interested in the above mentioned functions as being potentially superior to your current Canon DSLRs?

In either case with the caveat of adapter etc, renting sounds like a good idea.

I'd go for it, also depending on which rental service you use added benefit would be discounts on future rentals. I recently rented my same model camera for an excursion while mine was being repaired, I got a discount on future rentals and already used one on a lens I'd been dying to try.

I think that I got my answer without needing to rent the camera/adapter. Apparently the Canon lenses on a Sony mirrorless camera do not support all the focusing capabilities of the cameras.

However, what really shocked me is that the several Sigma DN lenses 19mm, 30mm and 60mm (all f/2.8) which fit right on the camera without an adapter do not support the face detect and eye detect focusing as well as some other focusing modes of the Sony 6000-6500 series cameras.

I guess that if I wanted the full range of focusing modes available on a Sony mirrorless camera, I would need to go to native Sony lenses. I am not prepared to do this since I am heavily invested in Canon glass.

I am attending a Sigma seminar in about two weeks and intend to put these questions on the floor at that seminar...

Instead of renting a Sony A7iii with the MC-11 adapter. I found a Sony A6500 with MC-11 adapter, extra battery and Smallrig Cage which I purchased at a very decent price. I paid for this camera + accessories with PayPal Credit. I will be able to test this camera out at my leisure and won't have the burden of only a week with the camera and if it won't work to my satisfaction with my Canon lenses, I can easily sell it for about what I paid for it. Any loss could be considered a rental price.

I realize that the A6500 is a crop camera but, I can live with a crop camera quite easily. IMO, the A6500 had a lot more going for it than the crop sensor Canon M-50 which with the EF lens adapter would cost right about the price that I am paying for the A6500.

Hopefully, at the Sigma Presentation, I can try some Sigma lenses built for for the Sony E mount.

I received the A6500 plus the Sigma MC-11. Right now, I do not like how the Canon lenses function with the MC-11...

Additionally, the jury is still out whether I like a EVF or not. My first impression is that I don't like it very well. It seems like I am viewing a TV image rather than seeing the "real world". I am glad that I bought a used copy of the A6500 because it is going to take me a while before I get used to this camera. I will play with it for a couple of weeks and make my final decision.

As far as using the Canon lenses with the MC-11 adapter on the A6500, I am not really keen on how they are functioning. Of course, this could be operator error and I also have to install the most recent MC-11 firmware. After I get thoroughly indoctrinated on the A6500, I will rent a Metabones locally (only $25 for Saturday through Monday) and will try the Canon glass with the Metabones. I will also try the Sigma glass that is compatible with the MC-11 adapter and A6500 when I attend the Sigma presentations next Friday.

What I need is a native Sony lens to let me get a feel for how this camera should function. I am getting a copy of the kit lens that was supplied with the A7ii and other full frame Sony mirrorless cameras. It is the 28-70mm variable aperture. This lens opens all of the focus capabilities (eye focus etc.) that the A6500 has to offer. It will also be a reasonably lightweight travel kit combined with a fast aperture wide angle prime lens.

I will keep updating this as I learn my new camera.

RIGHT NOW, MY THOUGHTS ARE THAT THE A6500 DEFINITELY WILL NOT REPLACE THE DSLR CAMERAS THAT I OWN. IT MAY HOWEVER, FIND A SPOT AS AN EXTRA CAMERA...
