Dominion of Canada Locomotive

Our first stop on our recent 11 day trip through the Province of Quebec was the Canadian Railway Museum in St Constant (just south of Montreal). I had never heard of it and was very pleasantly surprised when we got there.

Even more impressive was our timing. One of the locomotives, the Dominion of Canada was going to be moved out of the main building to make room for another engine. The Dominion of Canada, has a Canadian name, but was actually in service in the England by the London & North East Railway. The engine was built in 1937. The engine is not in operating condition, as it was cannibalized for parts after it was taken out of service. The exterior including the paint job were restored to its original look; LNER Class A4.

I shot the engine as it sat in the building and as it was towed out by another historic (and working) shunting engine in its original Canadian National Railways livery. The Dominion of Canada was equipped with European coupling gear and this was replaced with an American style coupler for the move. The two did not align quite right and seemed to cause some concern as the operation was halted several times as the coupling was examined, including the time that this shot was taken.

Well photographed, of course. The design of the locomotive is an interesting amalgam of the traditional and late '30s modernism.
