    One down, two to go

I first saw this abandoned farm in June of 1974 while I was working for the BC Forest Service in Kamloops. At that time there were two barns and the horse shelter at the site. At some time in the past ten years the North Thompson River eroded the river bank and one barn fell into the river.

I have wanted to get a photo of this barn for over 44 years. Circumstances have always prevented me. I only rarely travel this road, when I do it was often dark or overcast. For the last two years there was road construction north and south of the site, pulling off the road while travelling in a stream of cars, logging trucks, commercial transport trucks and campers would have been a bit crazy. Even for me

Last week I was able to safely stop. Not the optimal conditions, however the river may claim these structures in the next few years so I decided to at least try. I will try again for better shots if conditions are better and the opportunity arises.

    Wonderful shot Trevor.

No different for us non-landscapers. Way too many factors that conspire to deny us the shots we want.

Being able to capture history is part of what photography is about. Having the optimum conditions is not always possible. Well done.

    Thanks Bobo and Donald .

I think the success rate for photography is much like that of hunting and fishing. Both of which I used to do. Success is not guaranteed; which why is the activity is called Hunting or Fishing; not Catching

Beautiful picture in spite of the less than optimal conditions. I would consider loosing most of the grass to emphasize the building.

And I thought that I was a procrastinator. But I see that I'm a lightweight. I bow to a true master. Particularly when it ultimately ends in an excellent photo. Well done.

Is procrastination a bad thing? I will have to get around to working on that, maybe later.

The cropped version looks great in Lytebox.

Just out of curiosity, Trevor, what is the wildlife like in a scene like that? If it were here, the grass would have its share of snakes and spiders as well as assorted other things that bite and sting. I ask because I was just thinking that if I did come across a scene like this I would want to get up close and explore every nook and cranny, but on the other hand the thought of encountering snakes in the vegetation would probably put me off.

We have nothing toxic or dangerous in this location. If you go about 100 km south then there is the very low potential for rattlesnakes (but only in summer) and in spring there will be ticks (but nothing more than an irritant as they do not carry disease). I worked in a rattlesnake area for several years and only ever heard one, but never saw one. They try to avoid people so the danger level is really low

The land is posted against trespassing so I could not get any closer. This is a new concept for me, and one I will have to get used to when I move south. In northern BC and Alberta it is very rare to see no trespassing signs. Very common in the more populated south of BC

Trevor, I much prefer the first version, simply because it is different. The second version is 'as expected' in these kinds of photos. Just a thought.
    Cheers Ole

First one for me as well and I wholly subscribe to Donald's view of capturing history particularly when mother nature threatens to reclaim it.
